In the case of Destiny: The Taken King, fan theory has been so deeply embedded within the community that there are entire forum threads devoted to meticulously detailing the many speculations of Guardians thinking they have stumbled upon one of Bungie’s secrets. While those sharing their thoughts never expected a response from Bungie, one game dev decided to quell one of the more popular rumors directly.
Bungie’s Luke Smith, the creative director for The Taken King, took to the NeoGAF forums to address a post that had accumulated a number of the Destiny community’s most believable and widely-accepted theories. Smith responded to the impressively long list of fan speculation by saying:
While that’s probably not the response contributors to the thread wanted to hear, Smith at least specified one theory that was definitely erroneous to help prove his point. According to posters in the thread, the Vault of Glass raid originally consisted of rescuing Kabr and fighting against Atheon, with the end goal of forging the Aegis Shield to defeat Atheon. If that sounds familiar to you, that’s because this story is ripped straight from the pages of Destiny’s Grimoire lore companion. Smith, however, was quick to shoot down that Kabr’s involvement in taking down Atheon was ever on the table:
Apparently, the story in Destiny has been given a lot more love and care than popular opinion might commonly believe, and The Taken King looks to up that in a big way. Although the theory about Kabr and Atheon might have been incorrect, the release of Patch 2.0 heralds the beginning of Year Two, and with The Taken King’s release being imminent, there will be plenty more opportunity for conjecture regarding raids soon. While the beliefs of Guardians regarding Bungie’s original plans for Destiny might not always be right, the fact that there are so many is an indicator of a strong, devoted community. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that Destiny’s sale numbers are staggering, either.
