This much was revealed in the August 2018 issue of Game Informer, with Destiny 2’s PvP Design Lead Derek Carroll stating that when Forsaken launches, the team will take a break for a few weeks before it officially puts out “four new maps and a new team mode called Breakthrough.” According to the description of the mode, Breakthrough fits in the Competitive playlist, and it’s designed for two teams of four players, and it includes a heavy focus on objective-based gameplay. D2’s PvP Design Lead details the new mode in Forsaken by saying:
As many Guardians will likely proclaim, Carroll’s explanation of Breakthrough makes the new Destiny 2 mode sound a lot like a tweaked variation of Control, which requires a team of players to obtain and retain three different Capture Points on a map. Breakthrough will differ from Control, however, by eventually establishing the permanent roles of “Offense” and “Defense” on a given team partaking in the match instead of having the roles shift constantly. Of course, one could also liken it to Call of Duty’s Headquarters mode, too, which could be where Bungie got the inspiration for Breakthrough.
Taking all of this into consideration, it definitely looks as if Bungie is intending to use Forsaken as a major shot in the arm for Destiny 2, as the inclusion of Breakthrough is just one of many new wares coming to the game. Not too long ago, in fact, some eagle-eyed fans recently spotted that the forthcoming DLC could have a fresh Escalation Protocol mode as well.
Destiny 2’s Forsaken DLC is set to launch on September 4, 2018 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
