Destiny 2 clans of deaf players have been able to find workarounds to this problem. Over the past week, multiple groups of deaf players have revealed exactly how they make the game’s limited communication features work for them.
All-deaf clan DESTINYERRORALWAYSFAMOUS [DEAF] has been raiding since the first Destiny, beating Oryx after three months of trying. But they have been able to conquer Emperor Calus in a much shorter amount of time, using an app called Glide to help them communicate what they need to do to take the boss down.
Glide is a video chat messenger and the players quickly type in a message (either A for Axe, S for Sun, D for Dog, and C for Chalice) to tell the other players which Psion to punch. Destiny 2 developer Bungie probably didn’t expect players to communicate in the raid like this but these fireteams make it work. A brief clip from [DEAF]’s Mixer livestream of another Leviathan raid attempt can be seen below.
But [DEAF] isn’t the only clan of deaf players successfully taking down Calus. Traveller of Guardians, a clan which boasts over 40 deaf Guardians, also recently beat the raid (a clip from that livestream is above). The players use a camera program called Zoom to signal the symbols and save time.
Another method that some groups of deaf players have been using is the emotes system, where an emote will correspond to a specific symbol. While that method isn’t as accurate, Destiny 2’s upcoming emote wheel feature could aid players who do decide to use that system.
Destiny 2 players are always pulling off impressive feats in the game, from the Leviathan raid speedruns to the world’s first Prestige raid completions. But few are as heartwarming as this. It’s a shame that Destiny 2 on consoles doesn’t have in-game text chat as that could make things much easier for deaf players, but clearly these clans don’t let the challenge bring them down. So kudos to them for showing other players (hearing impaired or not) how it’s done.
